Asian journalists tour Cambodian-Thai border conflict areas

PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia (EAC News) — Journalists from across Asia on Thursday visited Cambodian families displaced by past border clashes with Thailand as part of a regional workshop on conflict reporting.

Reporters from China, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia traveled to Preah Vihear province, where they met with authorities and residents at the Wat Por 5000 Duem refugee camp.

The visit was organized by Cambodia’s Ministry of Information through a workshop on safety and risk management in conflict reporting, held Aug. 28–31. The program is designed to help journalists improve safety practices and share experiences covering tense or hostile environments.

After the opening session, the group toured temporary shelters and other sites in Preah Vihear affected by past clashes.

The delegation will also visit Oddar Meanchey province, including villages hit by cluster bombs and MK-84 bombs, as well as a damaged health center, pagoda, gas station and primary school. In Banteay Meanchey province, journalists will travel to border villages where Thai forces erected barbed wire near Cambodian homes.
